Frozen Pipe Repair – Long Island | The Pipe Doctor 516-295-2448

January 2, 2010

If you are experiencing the unfortunate dilemma of frozen or burst water pipes – or just the prospect of your pipes freezing in your walls, crawlspace, basement or cabin, there are a few things you need to know.

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, a frozen pipe may be at fault, especially if the current or previous night’s temperature is at or below freezing.  The best thing to do in this situation is to call a professional.

Why call The Pipe Doctor Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning?  It can be dangerous to thaw a pipe with an open flame, which will probably also damage the pipe.  If there is any standing water due to a burst pipe, even using a device such as a hair dryer can be hazardous, as using electrical appliances in areas of standing water can cause electrocution.

Pipes in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls are all vulnerable to freezing, especially if there are cracks or openings that allow cold, outside air to flow across the pipes.  Typically a frozen pipe is located an outer wall, which can be inaccessible.  If you’re not sure of the location of the frozen pipe, trying to figure it out yourself is not advisable.

Always Know Where and How To Shut Off Your Main Water Supply

A common sense aspect of frozen pipe prevention is to learn how to shut off the water supply to your house. If you don’t know where this valve is, find out immediately, before it is too late.

At The Pipe Doctor, during every service call, your technician will place valve tags on all the important valves in your home.

Once you find the correct valve, actually close and open it to make sure it will operate in case of a water emergency. This will help you minimize the damage by shutting the water off quickly. If you can’t find your shutoff valve, you can use the valve inside your water meter pit. This pit is usually located somewhere in your yard, probably near the sidewalk or street, under an iron cover plate, but again may be covered in snow or ice.

At The Pipe Doctor Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, we have the knowledge and expertise to take care of all your frozen pipes needs, as well as repair any structural damage caused by faulty plumbing or frozen pipes.

Gas Boiler Repairs should only be done by qualified professionals

January 2, 2010

DIY improvements to boilers should be carried out by professionals, says the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

Research by Zurich Insurance shows that 16 per cent of in-home self-improvements has led to professionals being called to fix mistakes.

The NHIC commented that “tampering” with gas boilers could lead to “really big problems” and also stated that there is a risk of explosion if gas pipelines are not changed by professionals.

Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the NHIC, said: “Don’t tamper with gas pipelines. It’s ok if you feel you’re up to it or if [the alterations are away from] the gas boiler, but when it comes to doing anything that relates to the gas boiler then you should leave it alone.”

The Zurich survey also revealed that fixing boilers and central heating is the home improvement most likely to require professional help, with rewiring of electrics and plastering walls also high on the list.

In related news, the government launched its Home Information Pack in 2007 which sets out guidelines for energy-efficient home improvements and it is estimated that one-third of UK residents plan on carrying out changes.ADNFCR-672-ID-18605655-ADNFCR
